Spinney Hill Park - Local Policing Unit - Update March 2008

Inspector Shane O'Neill

Inspector Shane O'Neill of Spinney Hill Park Local Policing Unit in Leicester

Well March is here and the year is marching on at a pace I was not expecting. Spinney Hill Park police station is alive with activity and our neighbourhood teams have just finished our regular consultations with residents, businesses and users of each of their neighbourhoods to decide what priorities we are to focus on in the next six months.

I must also add that my resolution, to use modern technology more, failed in February when I managed to ruin our microwave by leaving an item of metal cutlery in while warming a drink and then leaving the freezer door open meaning we had to defrost the whole appliance while trying to keep our provisions cold. (It is fair to say Mrs O'Neill was not happy)

Neighbourhood Priorities

Anti social behaviour is the main theme in the priorities that the community want us to look at in the next 6 months. As this is the second round of these consultations for me since I have been in post I am even more convinced that this kind of behaviour is essential to start to understand and design out from its earliest stages. I am looking forward to seeing what original ideas my officers and our partners will come up with in tackling these problems. I of course will keep you updated, and if you have seen a scheme or have an idea on how to tackle these issues, please feel free to share these with us at Spinney Hill.

Skate Park Visits

PCSO Will Willson has started taking a talented group of skaters to a properly equipped skate park on a Monday evening to divert them from skating in the street and in small parks where it is not safe for them and other users. The group numbers between seven and nine young people aged between 9 and 14; they have been developing their skating skills and are impressed by the skills of Will Willson himself. This I am sure is giving them a different opinion of the police service and developing friendships and teamwork amongst them.

St Matthews Dispersal Zone - Update

As discussed previously St Matthews was granted a dispersal order by Leicester City Council and Leicestershire Constabulary in December 2007, and it will be valid for 6 months to tackle an increase in anti social behaviour being experienced by the local residents from visitors outside the estate.

The dispersal zone has been used by the St Matthews Neighbourhood Team on numerous occasions since it was granted and local residents' feedback at this time is very positive. Having spoken to one resident in depth about it they were pleased that officers were using it to tackle the anti social behaviour in the areas highlighted as priorities for the estate.

Steve Riley, the sergeant of the priority team, is continuing to arrange and promote its use across the estate and is encouraging residents to inform the officers of any new areas attracting anti social behaviour. The upcoming lighter evenings and warmer days will no doubt see an increase in its application.

Ellis Out...

Jules Ellis

The Highfields Neighbourhood Team loses a dedicated beat officer in the guise of Pc 222 Jules Ellis in March 2008. Jules has been a neighbourhood officer for 10 years on Highfields and he is a regular attendee at the neighbourhood forums and action days. He has been a good friend to HART (Highfields Association of Residents and Tenants) and is well known for his work within the community. We wish Jules the very best in his new role in the police service and he knows he will always be welcome back.

He will be replaced by Pc 970 Steve Bales who has worked alongside the Highfields Team since April 2007 and has been at Spinney Hill Park police station as long as Jules. The changes to newsletters and posters will be updated when it happens.

Ellis In...

Pc 4496 Sarah Ellis will now be taking over on the Evington Road Area and Way Roads neighbourhood where she is supported by two police community support officers. Sarah has worked at Spinney Hill her entire service and is looking forward to the new challenges that being a neighbourhood officer entails. She will be mentored by the very same Steve Bales who has been previously mentioned and I personally wait with anticipation with her fresh look of the neighbourhood and its priorities.
