The Impact of Litter in St Peters

The presence of litter has a variety of impacts on our neighbourhood ranging from health issues to economic impacts. Most commonly it is seen as an aesthetic issue, but what is less understood is how this aesthetic problem impacts other issues in St Peters also.

Some of us feel that the degree to which St Peters suffers from litter is an indicator of lack of adequate neighbourhood management as well as mismanagement. All of which contributes to an impression of decline and disorder.

Litter is invariably the single biggest indicator of decline and mismanagement in our neighbourhood.

Increase in Crime and the fear of Crime

Litter creates a perception that crime and anti social behaviour are tolerated. Therefore criminal behaviour will increase in this area if litter is continued to be allowed free reign.

People will want to leave the area

People want to live in areas that are nice and well kept. They want to live in areas there they feel safe and at ease.

Financial Cost

Each year local authorities spend millions of pounds of rate payers money picking up litter thrown by people who couldn't care less.

This money is money that could have been used for other things that would really improve the lives of people in communities such as St Peters.

Smarter local authorises are now breaking the cycle of this issue by targeting those who drop litter.

Litter Lout Eats Fried Chicken

This litter lout sits in a communal garden (to which he should not have access) in St Peters eating a box of Maryland Fried Chicken and drinking a can of Stella Lager. He is just 15 to 20 feet away from a large litter bin that can clearly be seen by him if he cared to see it.

By the time he finishes, he has thrown the box, all the bones and wipes under the bench. He wandered off leaving those items under the bench along with the plastic blue carrier bag on the bench.

He simply did not care about the effect his laziness has on the community or who is going to clean up after him or how much littering costs the community
Littering is an offence against the whole community.

We are showing this mans photo on this website in order to challenge his behaviour and also to show leicester city council what they should have done years ago to deal with this problem

Until we publicise and identify those who treat our community with such contempt we will never break the back of littering as a problem

It is our hope that this will send shockwave's through the community that will act as a wake up call to those inclined to throw or leave litter and to let them know that the days in which they can do so with impunity are long gone.
