Changing St Peters in Leicester..? - You Bet !

We have fly tipping legislation... so if this problem amounts to fly tipping then lets use that legislation.

We have camera's pointing at these grot spots so let us also use them to identify the people discarding waste inconsiderately and deal with them.

The council should not themselves contribute to this problem when their workmen install replacement kitchens or bathrooms in these buildings. There is nothing worse than us or our visitors having to come and go past someone else's used WC Pan which workmen have left a few feet from the main entrance door to the buildings.

If you remove a kitchen or bathroom either as part of your renovation scheme or as a one off work order due to a maintenance request then as part of that work order you should plan ahead for just in time waste removal.

It is unsatisfactory that because we are city council tenants living in the multi occupancy buildings of St Peters we should have to come and go from our buildings past this waste when the residents of The Zenith Building in Colton Street for example which is privately owned do not.

They pay council tax, we pay council tax. They pay to live where they do and we pay to live where we do. Why do they have a clean, polished entranceway free from boards, wc pans and black refuse sacks and we don't?

The only answer I can see is that the services in St Peters are managed by Leicester City Council and lower standards seem to apply.

Why?

Issue Targeted for Resolution.

This issue has been discussed by the St Peters NM Board and has been highlighted as an issue in the area which we are to pursue a resolution.

What does this mean?

This means that as it effects the standard of living for the people in St Peters that the entire board is now seeking to have this problem addressed.

This is a multi agency approach including

  • Residents
  • Leicester City Council
  • Leicestershire Police
  • Healthcare Trusts
  • Housing Associations
and other services and organisations.

Large Item Waste Disposal

4th March 2007: Article has been updated... please see notes in "Action and response obtained" section below.

St Peters Neighbourhood Management Board

The prevailing practices and standards for large item refuse disposal in multi occupancy buildings in St Peters are unacceptable and have to change.

What type of waste are we discussing here in this article? Well we are talking about items too big to certainly put down the chutes and due to fire and health regulations can not be moved onto the landings adjacent the lifts, stairwells or chute room. Examples of such items include the following.

  • Kitchen Appliances
  • Mattresses
  • Lounge suites and armchairs
  • Kitchen cupboards
  • Baths, WC Pans, Sinks

  5. Tell your neighbours about this article on this website.

We have spoken with Pushpa Patel about this and intend to follow up this meeting on Wednesday 30th February 2007.

As a result of communications on this issue we have been informed the following action has been taken or will be taken to resolve this matter.

  • January 2007 Leicester city has informed the St Peters neighbourhood management board that a "crusher disposal machine" is to be parked in St Mathews.

  • LCC hope this will mean that the wardens whose job it is to remove this large waste will be able to remove the items more frequently each day as it will mean they do not have to travel to the waste tip outside the city on each van load.

  • February 23rd 2007 Some of us were today shown the site for the location of the crusher. We were shown the specially constructed concrete foundation. No Crusher was installed as LCC has had to acquire licensing and install special fencing around the facility. This will take until end of march \ april.

We have available to us a wide selection of options and choices to escalate pressure and action to bring about resolution of this issue.

Our future plans include media and publicity events involving local and national press as well as broadcast media. Also we have open to us a range of web search engine publicity using carefully selected keyword in conjunction with "Leicester City Council" or the name of some other agency or body who is in someway falling somewhat short of expectations.

Additional steps will see contact on this issue with elected officials.

On this issue we also plan the following activities...
